Poems for Peace
Subud International Cultural Association
September 21st
Rollins Studio Theatre at The Long Center

Austin-based Subud International Cultural Association will host "Poems for Peace," a poetry reading and performance as part of the global celebration of International Peace Day on Friday, September 21st, starting at noon.  The free lunch-time reading will feature veteran Austin performers Robert Faires and Barbara Chisholm sharing poems they love in the Long Center's Rollins Studio Theatre.
The Subud International Cultural Association (SICA) is part of a global coalition of non-governmental organizations working with UK's Peace One Day to organize activities celebrating peace and nonviolence.  The international observance kicks off in London with a concert by Elton John.
Former Executive Director of the Austin Creative Alliance, Latifah Taormina, is spearheading the Poems for Peace global initiative.  A poetry competition is also being held in conjunction with the observance, featuring a grand prize being $500.  The competition is open to the general public and submission details may be found online at www.poems-for-peace.org.
"This is about actively sharing one's love of peace through poetry." said Taormina, SICA's Board President. "Poems live in our music, our holy books and in our hearts. Poems for Peace is an invitation to connect to that place inside us all and share your favorite poems - wherever you are - on Peace Day."
The International Day of Peace - a.k.a. "Peace Day" - was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly.  The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982, with September 21st officially declared as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace by the General Assembly in 2002.
The noon reading on September 21st is free and open to the public.  The Rollins Studio Theatre is located in the lower level of The Long Center for the Performing Arts at 701 West Riverside Drive, on the corner of Riverside and South 1st Street.  For more information, visit www.poems-for-peace.org.
