The man Who Planted Trees
The Exchange Artists
October 4th through 20th
Sparky Pocket Park
The Exchange Artists will
stage a new site-specific theatrical adaptation of Jean Giono's
allegorical tale, The Man Who
Planted Trees, running October 4th
through 20th. The performances will take place both
indoors and outdoors at Sparky Pocket Park, with actors guiding
the traveling audience throughout the space to witness the
story unfold.
An internationally
beloved short story by French author Giono, the story reminds
each individual of their responsibility and opportunity to be a
steward of our natural resources. Set in Provence between 1913
and 1947, the story follows Elzeard Bouffier, a man who
single-handedly plants 100 acorns every day for more than 30
years. His perseverance and constancy in creation are set
in meaningful contrast to the immense destruction that young
traveler Jean experiences during the two World Wars.
Elzeard's work not
only restores a desolate landscape through his labor, but also
restores hope to the French people. The tale serves as a
gentle reminder that our lives and our livelihoods are in
direct connection with the earth.
Adapted by Katherine
Craft and directed by Rachel Wiese, the Exchange Artists
production brings Giono's simple tale to life with an immersive
play that utilizes both French and English languages, dance, an
original score by Rohan Joseph, projected media by Katie Rose
Pipkin and the natural beauty of Sparky Park. The cast
features Hildreth England, Alexander Hilary, Gene Menger,
Vanessa Marie O'Brien and Rommel Sulit, with costumes and
production oversight by Jamie Urban and technical coordination
by Zac Crofford.
Performances will
run Thursday through Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. Tickets
are a suggested donation of $15 to $25.
Sparky Park is located at
3701 Grooms Street, just south of 38 ½ Street and two
blocks west of Duval Street in the North University
neighborhood. For more information and advance
