The Materiality of Impermanence
Sharon Marroquín
March 23rd through 25th
Rollins Studio Theatre
Award-winning dancer
and choreographer Sharon Marroquín will premiere her new
dance work The Materiality of
Impermanence - chronicling a
dancer's journey of acceptance in fighting and surviving breast
cancer - on March 23rd through 25th at Rollins Studio Theatre
in The Long Center. Austin-based and Mexico City-born,
Marroquín has been developing the ambitious contemporary
dance work for the past 14 months and conceived The Materiality of Impermanence not only as a personal expression, but also as
a tool for those facing a diagnosis - as well as for their
loved ones and care providers.
The work brings
Marroquín and her choreography together with ten other
dancers to share her story of healing, accepting, understanding
and celebrating the resilience of the human body and soul.
Through a successful Kickstarter campaign, grants and
months of preparation, Sharon's project has taken shape to
reveal the healing powers of dance.
"Through The Materiality of Impermanence, I seek to express the ravages of breast cancer, and
at the same time, manifest the beauty and strength of the human
spirit," Marroquín said. "Using
contemporary movement language, the piece will be structured as
a series of solos, duets, trios and group sections, and will
include eleven performers, aerial dance, music, text and
video."
Additionally, four
local breast cancer survivors - along with Marroquín -
will participate in the "Art and Healing" panel,
along with a licensed psychotherapist and moderator Barbara Jo
Stetzelberger. The five women will share their stories of
personal transformation and healing, and the free event will
take place at the Rollins Studio Theatre following the 2 p.m.
performance on March 24th.
Marroquín has
toured nationally and internationally throughout her life,
relocating to Austin in 2000. She has choreographed
pieces for Big Range Austin Dance Festival, Forklift
Danceworks, Ballet East, Hot September Flurries and Tapestry
Dance Company, and she has been awarded three times by the
Austin Critics Table Award for "Outstanding
Choreographer" and listed several times as one of the
"Top Ten Dance Events" by The
Austin Chronicle.
Performances will be
held on March 23rd and 24th at 8 p.m., and March 24th and 25th
at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 to $25 for general admission,
and $10 for seniors, students and cancer survivors.
