May 22, 2009 - Summer Film Series Kick-Off Party at the Paramount
Theatre
Even though he now
earns his paycheck programming the productions for The Long
Center, Paul Beutel still can't get the Paramount Theatre
out of his blood. The man responsible for turning around
the historic and venerable theatre back during the 1980s and
90s is still programming its annual Summer Film Series, which is as much a part of Austin's summer
arts culture as the Zilker Hillside Musical or the Austin Symphony's 4th of July concert.
We dropped in on the
kick-off party at the Paramount on Thursday the 21st - a rest
stop on our way to opening night of The Long Now at The Blue Theatre. We arrived
early at 6:15 p.m., but the party was already in full swing.
Film fans feasted on
Moroccan munchies while perusing the silent auction items set
up along the upstairs lobby. A cute pair of Bogey and
Bergman impersonators roamed the lobby
Talk ran the gambit of the
Paramount's just-announced new season to which movies were on
the must-see list for this summer. Speaking of "must
see" events, the Austin
Chronicle has signed on the
co-host the Paramount's Majestic Party After Party - which will be held at Rusty
Spurs on June 5th, following the Priscilla,
Queen of the Desert Party and
screening at the theatre.
