March 16, 2009: Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo
Sunday afternoon, it was Cowboys-0, Bulls-12.  Not a single rider could stay seated for the full eight seconds during the championship round of bull riding during the matinee performance of XTreme Bull Riding at the rodeo.  Even the Mutton Bustin’ was kind of a bust.

The cold and wind must have kept folks at home, because both the grandstands and the fairgrounds were only half full.  But with the spring temperatures returning this week, we expect record crowds out at the Travis County Expo Center.
We didn’t stick around for the Jimmy Wayne concert following the arena action, and instead wandered the fairgrounds.  Food booths abound, and it seems everything that you could possibly consider consuming is now available “on a stick.”  Even pizza.
We checked out our old favorites: the petting zoo (great comedy in watching little kids trying to navigate a herd of hungry goats), Elsie the Borden Cow (for sentimental reasons), and the carnival midway.  We missed the chuckwagons this year, but the pig races get center stage this time, along with a BMX bike show.
The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo runs through March 28th.  And you still have time to catch some of the big name entertainers still slated for the rodeo, including Randy Travis, Carlos Mencia, and Kevin Fowler.  And tell Elsie that I said “hi.”
