September 9, 2010 - State Fair of Texas Big Tex Choice Awards
Last year we told you about
the annual Big Tex Choice Awards, held at the State Fair of Texas - where food vendors duke it out in the kitchen to
determine the new, official fried food item for this year's
State Fair. Which is only fitting, since the corn dog was
invented at those
So on Labor Day, a panel of
three judges picked the winning entries to award the categories
"Best Taste" and "Most Creative"
The winners that bested last year’s entries of Deep
Fried Butter, Deep Fried Peaches & Cream, and Fried Pecan
Pie? Texas Fried Frito Pie and Fried Beer. We kid you not.
They beat out 2010
contenders that included Fried Club Salad, Fried S'mores Pop
Tart, and Deep Fried Frozen Margarita. We couldn't make
this stuff up - even after a night of eating vodka popsicles
(which we were served recently at “well-to-do”
soiree...).
And don’t forget that
Austin Restaurant Week runs September 19th through the 22nd and
September 26th through the 29th. You can dine your way
around Austin’s top restaurants for pennies on the
dollar, while supporting the Sustainable Food Center.
More than 60 A-list restaurants will serve up stellar
three-course dinners - priced from $25 to $35 - and some
offering lunches for $10 to $15.
