September 9, 2010 - State Fair of Texas Big Tex Choice Awards
Last year we told you about the annual Big Tex Choice Awards, held at the State Fair of Texas - where food vendors duke it out in the kitchen to determine the new, official fried food item for this year's State Fair.  Which is only fitting, since the corn dog was invented at those

hallowed fairgrounds in Dallas.
So on Labor Day, a panel of three judges picked the winning entries to award the categories "Best Taste" and "Most Creative"    The winners that bested last year’s entries of Deep Fried Butter, Deep Fried Peaches & Cream, and Fried Pecan Pie?  Texas Fried Frito Pie and Fried Beer.  We kid you not.
They beat out 2010 contenders that included Fried Club Salad, Fried S'mores Pop Tart, and Deep Fried Frozen Margarita.  We couldn't make this stuff up - even after a night of eating vodka popsicles (which we were served recently at “well-to-do” soiree...).

And don’t forget that Austin Restaurant Week runs September 19th through the 22nd and September 26th through the 29th.  You can dine your way around Austin’s top restaurants for pennies on the dollar, while supporting the Sustainable Food Center.  More than 60 A-list restaurants will serve up stellar three-course dinners - priced from $25 to $35 - and some offering lunches for $10 to $15.
And these are some amazing offerings from the top chefs in town, folks!  Check out all the menus at online at www.RestaurantWeekAustin.com - and start mapping out your culinary adventure!
